Roofing Costs

When planning roofing for your log home, there are four common roof materials to look at:

Asphalt/Fiberglass Shingles

Asphalt and fiberglass roofs are the most popular, and the material is the least expensive. These kind of roofs typically last 20-25 years and cost $50-$150 per square foot.

Wood Shingles

Wood shingles are popular with log home owners because they continue the wood look from the walls to the roof. They typically last 20 years and cost $125-$200 per square foot. Check the codes in your area before ordering wood shingles as they may not be allowed in areas prone to wildfires.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofs are usually made from steel and covered with a durable paint. They are fairly easy to install and last at least 25 years. (Copper roofs can actually last 50 years or more.) They cost $100-$600 per square foot.

Slate Shingles

Slate shingles look elegant on just about any house. They last 50 years or more and cost $300-$1,000 per square foot. Slate is heavy, so you may need to reinforce the roof framing in order to support the material.

Tip: If you're looking to save money, no matter which roofing material you choose, avoid log home plans that call for dormers or hips and valleys as these design options will increase roofing costs.
