Here are some design tips to help with maintenance: You'll want to start with a solid foundation. The lowest logs in your house should be between 12 inches and 18 inches from the ground. Exposed log and should be kept undercover. Planning your gutters so that water is directed far enough away from your home that it doesn't splash from the ground onto your logs. When planning your landscaping, plant trees and foliage so they do not press right up against your log home, inviting moisture and insects onto your wood. Maintenance tips for the long run: Promptly fill any exterior cracks that could hold water. Keep up with applications of recommended oil or preservatives, but know your climate; how often treatments are necessary will depend on the prevailing whether around your home.
