Log Home Kits: What to Ask before Buying

Log home kits can make building a log home a simpler, and sometimes more cost-effective, process than going through the work of hiring an architect. There are so many log home kits available, that you can probably find something that fits you and your family very well. Before purchasing a log home kit, there are some things you should know and some questions you should ask.

As mentioned, log home kits come in quite a variety of sizes, shapes, options and standards. Most kits come with more than simply logs; it's what and how much more that can make comparison shopping difficult since all kids are different.

No matter which log home kit you purchase, it's important to realize that a log home kit is not a complete log home. You'll need to factor in the cost of appliances, countertops, masonry work, fixtures and hardware, and more. By asking a lot of questions -- before you buy -- you can figure out ahead of time a more accurate total cost for your log home.

Questions to Ask:
  • Could you explain your building process?
  • What will the kit look like when it arrives at my site?
  • Is your wood treated? (Should it be for my climate?)
  • What kind of warranty do your log home kits provide?
  • How are your logs dried?
  • How do you protect against/compensate for shrinking and settling?
  • What species are your logs? How big are they?
  • How long have you been in business? (Ask to see, in person if possible or through pictures, examples of completed homes they have done, not just new ones but homes several years old as well).
  • Could you please explain other costs I should plan for?
