Log Homes >> Insects/Pest Control

Are Insects a Problem with Log Homes?

Since log homes are made predominantly out of wood, people often wonder if bugs become a problem after the initial building is complete. Insects that like wood such as termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles, can pose a small threat, but only if they are not kept under control. It should be noted that these insects are equally likely to plague traditional frame houses in rural settings, especially those set in wooded areas.

As with other types of pest control, prevention is the key. There are numerous preservatives, finishes, and coatings that are specially made to protect log homes from insects and fungi. You can help keep them effective by keeping your logs dry; don't allow shrubs to grow right up against the house, and don't keep stacks of firewood next to your walls.

You'll definitely want to take steps if you find termites or other wood-eating insects in your home, but you shouldn't worry about the walls collapsing around you.
