Self-watering Hanging Planters

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

hanging planter Whether you’ve got a home made out of logs or just a regular abode, a hanging planter can do a lot to perk up the patio or deck area, or even improve the view out a window. Since this basket is self-watering, it can reduce watering chores (perfect if you’ve got a vacation home that you’re using infrequently or as a rental, and you can’t come by every day to keep it pretty):

“A patented dual-action wick system (capillary mat plus evaporation grill) distributes water from a 1-quart reservoir so your plants are never dry, never overwatered. Convenient refill hole is located at the bottom, so you don’t need a ladder to water your basket.”

The baskets are available from the Gardeners’ Supply Store for $12.95 a piece. Get a whole set without spending a fortune.

Log Cabin Playhouse for the Children

log play houseIf you’ve got a log home and want to give your kids a fun playhouse in the backyard, why not continue the log theme there? True, this play house from Little Colorado isn’t made out of actual logs but it is at least made out of wood and finished with a non-toxic Danish oil (you can also paint or wallpaper the flat walls, something that can be a challenge with real logs).

You can get the play house for under $400 at Amazon:

rustic pergolaIf you’re a log home owner and you want to extend the rustic lifestyle to the backyard, you might consider a pergola, pavilion, arbor, or other garden structure made from logs.

The sheltered seating area shown here is one of several structures available from Romancing the Woods, a company that specializes in gazebos, railings, gates, benches, bridges, pergolas, etc. in rustic styles that might have been found in 19th-century European estate gardens or that fit into the popular Adirondack Great Camp style. The company builds with eastern red cedar and other tree species indigenous to the Catskill Mountains.

Bambi Sitter Garden Stool, a Cute Addition to the Backyard

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

deer-shaped garden stoolIf you’re planning to have a garden behind or alongside your log home, you might have fun shopping for appropriate accessories. Aside from the usual tools, a garden stool or bench can give you a place to rest in between diggings. This “Bambi Sitter” seems like the perfect choice for a nature lover. It’s functional (sit on Bambi’s back to take a load off), but it could just stand in the corner as a garden guardian too.

The deer-inspired seat is made from pre-aged pine wood that will develop a handsome silver patina as it ages. It costs $390 from the Conrad Shop.
