Recycled and Sustainable Log Furniture

If you like the idea of eco-friendly furniture, then you may want to check out one of the companies offering chairs, sofas, tables, etc. that are made from recycled or sustainably harvested products. The collection pictured here is from New West and features “recycled materials, organic ranch raised wool with dyeing and weaving done locally.” It seems like the perfect match for someone who wants to be responsible about the planet’s resources and yet wants the Old West rustic look (usually heavy on the wood and heavy on the leather).
Of course, products aren’t necessarily inexpensive because they’re recycled, and you know you’re going to pay more for anything with “organic” in the description. In this collection, the chair costs $4,155, the ottoman $1,455, the table $1,155, and the lamp $375 (don’t forget an extra $435 for the lamp shade).
If you like the idea of giving some Old West flair to your log home, you can start in the bedroom with a wagon wheel headboard. This particular piece is made from bent willow by a company that specializes in making all sorts of furniture from willow trees. They have everything from porch swings, to tables, to rocking chairs, to plant stands.
A porch swing is a pleasant way to while away the hours on a warm day. These seats are made to endure outdoor weather, and they can often hold two people, so you can get cozy.
If you want the feel of nature inside your home, it’s hard to top a grizzly bear coming out of the coffee table. This fearless hunter is complete with a fish in his mouth. Available from Black Forest Decor, the table usually costs $1,000 but was on sale for just over $750 when I visited. There’s a matching end table (the bear isn’t catching a fish on the end table but standing erect in the middle of it…I’m not sure where you put a lamp when there’s a big bear taking up a big chunk of the table space but I guess you can figure that out after you set it up) for $800. Get the whole set, and nobody will accuse you have not having that rustic back-to-nature log cabin feel (they may accuse you of other things, but we won’t go there).
I imagine one of the best things about having a log home would be browsing for furniture suitable for a loggy environment. I think this Kentucky log rocking chair would do just fine, especially if you like a little rocker action when you’re reading your favorite book. This one comes without a finish, so you could actually stain it yourself in order to match it to your current decor (or even the stain color you used on your log walls).
