Monday, January 1st, 2007

paper towel rackIf you’ve decided to go with a rustic theme in the kitchen of your log home or log vacation get-away, then you might want to carry that through to the accessories. This wrought iron paper towel holder has a fun wilderness touch with its decorative pine cones. It’s available in an upright countertop version (shown) and a horizontal under-cabinet mounting version. Either one will cost you about $18 at Sticks & Stitches.

If you really like the pine cone theme (hey, there are worse things to sprinkle throughout the kitchen), you can match your other household accessories to this one. The company also sells wall hooks, napkin holders, bookends, key holders, curtain rods, and bathroom accessories, all with the pine cone theme.

Pot Rack from Reclaimed Wood

Monday, November 13th, 2006

rustic wooden pot rackIf you want your log home to remind you of the olden days, you can try buying furniture and accessories made from reclaimed wood. Not only does this stuff have a lot of character (instead of the flawless uniform lumber that’s used today, old boards were sawn by hand and many show evidence of nail holes, dents, and scratches from decades of use), but it’s an environmentally friendly way to furnish your home. Items constructed from reclaimed wood can be built without any new trees being felled.

This rustic pot rack is one example of such a product. Made from early 1900s reclaimed barn boards, the pot rack is finished with a natural stain designed to enhance the beauty of the wood. Available from Buffalo Creek Designs, it’s one of several pot racks and coat racks made this way.

Custom Copper Farmhouse Sinks

Monday, October 30th, 2006

farmhouse sink with patternIf you’ve got a log home, you might want a kitchen with an old-fashioned rustic feel instead of the latest and greatest stainless steel and granite combinations. One way to make a kitchen feel rustic is to include a farmhouse sink, a sink style that was popular in generations past. Fortunately, you can get that old-fashioned feel with all the modern conveniences and design styles (no hand-pumping the water, thank you very much).

This handsome farmhouse sink with a basket-weave front (or apron) is from Texas Lightsmith, a company that specializes in copper work. They like to engrave an image or a pattern into the apron of the sink. They’ve got distressed patterns, diamond rivet patterns, and even a sink with a crab on the apron that was custom made for someone.
